Leak detection with krypton-85
Description
Compared with other radioactive gases, 85Kr seems to be very suited for most applications in the detection of leaks. For each kind of object, a single calibration of the standard leak value is sufficient. This is done by determining the ratio between the 514 keV gamma peak and the integrated spectrum (Bremsstrahlung), or the Cherenkov radiation. For leak detection, the Cherenkov radiation measurement is preferable because of its higher sensitivity. Near the limit of detection a statistical treatment of the experimental data provides a high level of certainty that the leaks found are real
