Preliminary analysis of radioactivity of Lunar soil brought by ''Luna 24'' from Mare Crisium

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow. Inst. Geokhimii i Analiticheskoj Khimii

Description

Published are the results of preliminary analysis of natural and cosmogonic radioisotope content in Lunar soil brought from the depth of 80-114 cm, counting from conventional zero. The measurements were carried out using gamma spectrometer with a coaxial Li-drifted Ge detector with a sensitive volume of 74 cm3. A description of the gamma spectrometer and measurement technique are given. Gamma spectra of Lunar soil in various energy ranges are presented. Uranium concentration was determined according to 214Bi radioisotope and that of thorium - according to 228Ac radiosotope. The data were processed on the BESM computer by the least square method. The mean rate of 22Na isotope formation in Lunar regolite under the effect of galaxy cosmic radiation is (45+-8) nuclei/minxkg. The investigation of the lunar soil will be continued
