Testing of in situ emergency monitoring field instruments with a subject undergone medical diagnostic testing

  • 1. Radiation Safety Section, Radiological Safety Division, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam 603102 (India)

Description

In case of hypothetical nuclear accident, estimation of radioactive iodine in human thyroid is also needed for the evaluation of dose to the individuals. Portable radiation monitoring instruments like scintillometer, thyroid monitor are calibrated for this rapid in situ monitoring purpose. Usually these instruments once calibrated are tested periodically with standard sources to ensure their performance. Persons who have undergone medical diagnostic procedure with radioactive materials can also be gainfully utilized for testing such post accidental in situ monitoring instruments. These people make excellent test subjects for testing the emergency response instruments that would be used in the event of an accidental or intentional release of radioactivity that may result in intake of radioactive iodine by members of public. The level of activity present in their body over a period of time would simulate the prevailing field conditions vis-a-vis the varying levels of intake of radioactive iodine by the members of the public
