Evaluating the role of porphyrins as multimodal vectors: application in theranosis

  • 1. Radiopharmaceuticals Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Preferential accumulation of porphyrins in tumorous lesions is well-documented in the contemporary literature. Photosensitizing properties along with tumor avidity pave the way of utilizing porphyrins in PDT (photodynamic therapy). Besides, radiolabeling of porphyrins with diagnostic radionuclides in combination with PDT or with suitable theranostic radionuclides enables their possible uses as theranostic agents in cancer management. Further, conjugation of porphyrins with suitable peptides, antibodies or drugs can enhance their target specificity and improve the issues related to their poor pharmacokinetic behaviour. (author)
