Transfer of 137Cs to infants via human breast milk

Description
The concentration of 137Cs has been measured in samples of breast milk from 12 mothers. In connection with these measurements, whole-body measurements of the 137Cs content in the mothers and their babies were performed. All studied individuals were living in two different areas in northern Sweden. The 137Cs in their bodies is a result of the fallout after the Chernobyl accident. From the result of the measurements it was estimated that approximately 15% of the mothers daily 137Cs intake via the food is transferred to the baby. (author)
