Parity violation in electroexcitation of the giant resonance and the structure of neutral weak currents

Description

P-odd asymmetry is discussed in scattering of polarized electrons by even-even nuclei with excitation of various giant-resonance levels (1-,T = 1, S = 0; 1-,T = 0 and 1, S = 1; 2-, T = 0 and 1, S = 1). It is shown that measurement of this asymmetry for the isovector and isoscalar levels of the giant resonance will permit information to be obtained in a model-independent manner on the structure of P-odd part of the Lagrangian of the eN interaction. In the framework of the Weinberg-Salam theory, numerical estimates are obtained for the value of the asymmetry arising in electroexcitation of the giant resonance, summed over all levels considered. For example, at an initial electron energy E = 200 MeV and a scattering angle theta = 1500, the asymmetry is A = -1.4x10-5. The dependence of the asymmetry on E and theta is given. It is shown that the asymmetry increases in absolute value with increase of E and theta
