Further studies on gamma radiolysis of some mono- and di-saccharides in the solid state
- 1. Al-Azhar Univ., Tanta (Egypt). Faculty of Science
Description
Glucose and lactose have been prepared and recrystallized from bidistilled water. Extensive measurements have been carried out in the solid state comprising infrared and electronic absorption spectra before and after exposure to a gamma dose of 5 x 107 rd. These materials were chosen as representatives of mono- and di-saccharides. The relative strength of the cyclic structures and the magnitude of the gamma radiation effect were evaluated in each case. Radiolytic oxidation mechanisms were established for both mono- and di-saccharides. A correlation between the gamma radiation effect and relative strength of cyclic structures has been put forward
