Adaptation of a May spinning top monodispersed aerosol generator to animal inhalation studies

Description

Studies of respiratory deposition of aerosols in the beagle dog will be undertaken using monodispersed aerosols of 198Au tagged iron oxide or metallic gold. In preparation for this study a dog exposure glove box was modified to accommodate a May spinning top aerosol generator. This generator is capable of generating monodispersed aerosols in the size range of 0.5 μm to 5 μm aerodynamic equivalent diameter, a range useful for such a study. Preliminary operation checks of the aerosol system have begun using uranine dye aerosols in place of the 198Au tagged aerosols. A mass concentration 2.9 mg/m3 of 2 μm AED particles has been obtained. Such a concentration will be sufficient for tagged aerosols to be used in the study. (U.S.)
