Contribution to the study of degradation products of spent fuel reprocessing solvents using mass spectroscopy, its different linkages and by the use of stable isotopes

Tributylphosphate (TBP) is used as an extraction solvent in nuclear fuel reprocessing. The presence of uranium fission products leads to the formation of a large variety of organic compounds resulting from radiolytic degradation of TBP. Some of these compounds can complex metallic cations, and as a result, to decrease nuclear fuel extraction yields. In this work we have studied by tandem mass spectrometry the fragmentation mechanisms of different TBP and their dimers. These molecules are interesting because of the similarity of their structures to other more complex molecules formed by irradiation (functionalized TBP and TBP dimers). This work allowed to identify mixtures of degradation products and relate their structures to radiolytic mechanisms. Ail these results, including structure determination and formation mechanisms, have been validated by using specifically labeled compounds (deuterium, oxygen 18, nitrogen 15). (author)
Abstract (French)
Le phosphate de tributyle (TBP) est utilise comme extractant dans le procede de retraitement des combustibles nucleaires. La presence de produits de fission de l'uranium est responsable de la formation d'une grande variete de molecules organiques resultant de la degradation radiolytique du TBP. Certaines de ces molecules sont particulierement genantes en raison de leur capacite a complexer les cations metalliques, phenomene qui a pour consequence de faire decroitre les rendements d'extraction. Lors de ce travail, nous avons etudie les mecanismes de fragmentation, par spectrometrie de masse en tandem, de differentes molecules de TBP et de ses dimeres. Ces molecules sont interessantes en raison de la similitude de leur structure a d'autres molecules plus complexes formees par irradiation (TBP fonctionnalise et dimeres de TBP fonctionnalises). Ce travail a permis l'etude complete de produits de degradation eta permis de relier leur structure aux mecanismes de formation. Ces resultats, concernant la determination des structures et les mecanismes de formation, ont ete valides par l'emploi de composes marques de facon specifique (deuterium, oxygene 18, azote 15).
