Correct analysis of P-violation measurements in neutron resonance reactions

Description

The P-violation effects in polarized neutron transmission which exhibit major enhancements of 5-6 orders of magnitude when measured in the vicinity of compound nucleus resonances are discussed. It is shown that the same chaoticity which produces huge enhancements of P- and T-violation in neutron compound resonances also necessitates the use of statistical methods for the analysis of observables and their proper connection with strength parameters of the symmetry breaking interactions. This does not lower the reliability of information obtained as compared to simple nucleon-nucleon interaction processes. It provides that one obeys certain general rules and uses the correct statistical methods. In theory this boils down to using the methods of random matrix approach whose reliability was established during half a century in neutron resonance spectroscopy. The conclusion is made that the rule resulting from Bayesian statistics which states more independent on-resonance observations even with smaller accuracy, should be especially followed in planning the experimental strategy of T-violation measurements. 17 refs., 5 figs
