Description

The mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) of X-rays near absorption edges was measured by employing a HPGe detector and radioactive sources of 241Am, 55Fe, 57Co each of 25mCi procured from BRIT Mumbai were used as X-ray sources in the present work, for compounds Lanthanum oxide and Lanthanum sulphate. The results compared with theoretical values, agreement found to be good when the incident photon energy is far below and away from the L edge. In some cases, disagreement is observed between measured and theoretical MAC values near L absorption edges. In the present work, the non validity of mixture rule and discrepancies of obtained values with theory near L absorption edge is discussed
