S. 2201: a bill to amend the Nuclear Waste Policy Act to provide for increased state participation in selection of sites for characterization, and for other purposes. Introduced in the Senate of the United States, Ninety-Ninth Congress, Second Session, March 18, 1986

The Nuclear Waste State Participation Act of 1986 (S.2201) directs states to participate more fully in the selection of sites and planning for nuclear waste disposal facilities. The bill requires a site characterization study and a plan for all activities from initial excavation through decommissioning. A time frame for the selection states January 1, 1995 as the deadline for the President to submit three candidate sites from five to be nominated by DOE. He will submit three additional sites by January 1, 1999. State governors and legislatures, as well as affected Indian tribes have the authority to notify Congress one time of a disapproval of any specific site.
