Description

Polarized neutron scattering techniques have been used to obtain information regarding the ground state electronic properties of the intermediate valence compound CePd3. The spatial distribution of the magnetization induced by a magnetic field of 42.5 kG in a single crystal of CePd3 has been studied at 100 and 4.2 K. We find that at 100 K the measured form factor is in good agreement with the free-ion 4f magnetic form factor of Ce3+. At 4.2 K on the other hand, deviations from a 4f magnetic factor were observed. An adequate fit to the experimental data taken at 4.2 K can be obtained by assuming that the induced magnetization contains a significant component (approx.17% of the total) of Ce--5d electronic character
