Determination of 90Sr levels in the human skeleton, soft tissues, and excretions

In 1977, the Institut fuer Strahlenhygiene des Bundesgesundheitsamtes of the Federal Board of Health again took up measurements to find out about skeleton levels of 90Sr in the West German population. Sample treatment and the method of measurement are reviewed, followed by on error analysis and some considerations on the detection limit. The findings for the year 1977 are presented in the form of tables and graphs. It was found that the mean 90Sr level in the tibiae has further decreased. At the moment, the mean value is about 0.95 pCi 90Sr/gCa (0.035 Bq 90Sr/gCa). With the 1977 data and the measurements of earlier years, a rough estimate of the 'mean effective half-life over all groups of age' was possible. The investigations will be continued. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Vom Institut fuer Strahlenhygiene des Bundesgesundheitsamtes wurden 1977 die Messungen zur Knochenexposition der Bevoelkerung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland durch Strontium 90 wieder aufgenommen. Es wird ein Ueberblick ueber Probenaufarbeitung und Messmethode gegeben. Eine Fehlerbetrachtung und Ueberlegungen zur Nachweisgrenze schliessen sich an. Die Ergebnisse fuer das Jahr 1977 sind in tabellarischer und graphischer Form dargestellt. Dabei zeigt es sich, dass die mittlere Knochenkonzentration der Tibia an Strontium 90 weiter abgenommen hat. Sie liegt zur Zeit bei 0,95 pCi Sr 90 / gCa (0,035 Bq Sr 90 / gCA). Mit den Daten fuer 1977 und den Messungen frueherer Jahre konnte eine grobe Abschaetzung der 'Mittleren effektiven Halbwertszeit ueber alle Altersgruppen' durchgefuehrt werden. Die Untersuchungen werden weitergefuehrt. (orig.)
