Thermal expansion studies of Th1-xUxMo2O8

  • 1. Fuel Chemistry Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre , Mumbai (India)

Description

Th1-xUxMo2O8 (x=0, 0.2 and 0.5) were synthesized first time by reacting Th1-xUxO2 and MoO3 in appropriate molar ratios at 1073 K in evacuated quartz ampoules for 16 h. XRD data of Th1-xUxMo2O8 were indexed on hexagonal system. The decrease in lattice parameters and volume as a function of U+4 concentration can be attributed to the difference in ionic radii of Th+4 and U+4. Thermal expansion behavior of β-ThMo2O8,, Th0.8U0.2Mo2O8, and Th0.5U0.5Mo2O8 were studied under vacuum in the temperature range of 298-1073 K using high temperature X-ray diffractometer (HTXRD). The average volume thermal expansion coefficients for β-ThMo2O8, Th0.8U0.2Mo2O8, and Th0.5U0.5Mo2O8 are 14.43x10-6, 16.31x10-6 and 12.04x10-6K-1, respectively. (author)
