Measurement of the residual polarization of negative muons in gaseous hydrogen

  • 1. Joint Inst. for Nuclear Research, Dubna (USSR)

Description

In experiments on a gas target filled by superpure hydrogen up to 40 bar pressure the residual polarization of negative muons in the ground state of rhoμ- and dμ atoms is measured in the muon beam of the 680 MeV JINR synchrocyclotron. Utilization of gaseous hydrogen increases difficulties connected with determination of necessary statistics, however, it permits to considerably (20 times) decrease the rate of depolarization processes due to Stark collisions and exchange collisions that permits to detect final residual polarization for deuterium. The residual polarization values in protium Psub(μ)(H)=0.3+-0.9% and in deuterium P(μ)(D)=1.0 +-0.9% are obtained
