Description

The regions of neutron-proton and neutron-neutron quasi-free scattering (QFS) have been investigated in the nd breakup reaction at 25.8 MeV, measuring absolute cross sections with an accuracy of a few per cent. The data were analyzed by means of detailed Monte-Carlo simulations based on rigorous three-body calculations with realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials. For np QFS, good agreement between theory and experiment was found. In contrast, for nn QFS the experimentally determined cross section is at least six standard deviations larger than the theoretical predictions
