International Uranium Resources Evaluation Project (IUREP) orientation phase mission summary report: Morocco

Description

A report has recently been published on the findings of the mission to Morocco under the International Uranium Resources Evaluation Project (IUREP) Orientation Phase. The IUREP Orientation Phase Mission estimates that the speculative resources of Morocco range from 70 000 to 180 000 tonnes of uranium, half of which could be expected to occur in the Northern Provinces, which are relatively well explored, and the other half in the little explored Southern Provinces. In the north, speculative resources are fairly evenly distributed among the various types of deposit, in particular vein deposits (intragranitic and contact) linked with Hercynian and Precambrian blocks, the sandstone type deposits linked with Mesozoic strata and the volcanogenic deposits, especially of Precambrian age. The potential for large high-grade deposits, especially for those linked with unconformities and linear albitites, has been little investigated in Morocco and is chiefly thought to lie in the Precambrian in the Anti-Atlas and Southern Provinces. Here, the presence of acid volcanic rock reinforces the uranium potential, and there is also some potential for calcrete-related deposits. Phosphate-related uranium, to be recovered shortly, constitutes by far the largest reserves in Morocco, estimated at about 7 million tonnes of recoverable uranium. Recommendations have been made for further study of known occurrences and identification of new ones, such as unconformity and albitite-related deposits. (author)

Abstract (French)

Un rapport a ete publie recemment sur les resultats de la mission effectuee au Maroc dans le cadre de la phase d'orientation du Projet International d'Evaluation des Ressources en Uranium (IUREP). La mission d'etude IUREP au Maroc estime que les ressources speculatives du pays se situent entre 70 000 et 180 000 tonnes d'uranium dont la moitie se trouverait dans les Provinces du Nord, relativement bien connues et l'autre moitie dans les Provinces du Sud du pays, encore mal connues. Dans le Nord, ces ressources speculatives se repartissent assez equitablement entre les differents types de gisement, notamment le type filonien (intragranitique et de contact) lie a des massifs hercyniens et precambriens, le type lie au sedimentaire mesozoïque et le type lie au volcanisme, surtout precambrien. Le potentiel pour les gisements a gros tonnages et teneurs elevees, en particulier pour les gisements lies aux discordances et aux albitites lineaires, est peu etudie au Maroc et est surtout attribue au Precambrien de l'Anti-Atlas et des Provinces du Sud. Ici, le volcanisme acide ajoute encore au potentiel en uranium en plus d'un certain potentiel pour les gisements lies aux calcretes. L'uranium lie aux phosphates et recupere prochainement constitue de loin les reserves les plus importantes du Maroc, estimees a environ 7 millions de tonnes d'uranium recuperables. Des recommandations pour l'etude des indices connus et pour l'etude de sujets nouveaux comme les gisements sous discordance ou les gisements lies aux albitites ont ete faites. (author)
