Moessbauer study of iron carbide nanoparticles produced by sonochemical synthesis

Description

Iron carbide nanoparticles were produced by ultrasonication of ferrocene in diphenylmethane and their properties were investigated using Moessbauer spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The as-prepared particles were amorphous paramagnetic iron carbides, and the particles obtained after annealing exhibited magnetic components. The particles obtained after annealing at 873 K under argon flow for 2 h consisted of Fe3C, α-Fe, and paramagnetic iron carbide, while Moessbauer spectra indicated that no iron oxides were present.
