A new facility for radiobiological studies with proton beams: Survival and DNA damage in mammalian cells

Description
A beam line suitable to study the radiobiological efficiency of protons near the Bragg peak has been set up at the CN-7MV Van de Graaf accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The facility makes it possible irradiation, under atmospheric pressure, of cultured cells growing as monolayer on mylar foils, with monoenergetic proton beams in the energy range 0-6 MeV at dose rates from tens of mGy/min to tens of Gy/min. Short time and long time biological end points, as DNA damage (single strand and double strand breaks) and survival, have been studied in V79 cells, and the results compared to that obtained using X rays
