Kinetic studies on extraction rate of uranyl nitrate in HDEHP-kerosene system

Description

The kinetics of the extraction of uranyl nitrate in the HDEHP-kerosene system has been studied using the single drop technique. The effects of concentration of UO22+ and HDEHP and pH value on the extraction rate of uranyl ion have been examined. The extraction rate measured is found to be of the first order with uranyl concentration in aqueous phase, the second order with HDEHP concentration in organic phase and zero order with the pH value. The extraction rate is increased with increasing temperature. The apparent activation energy is found to be 16.0 kJ/mol between 15-40 deg C. The kinetic mechanism would be expressed by the equations. It is suggested that the rate-controlling step may be the chemical reaction of uranyl ion with HDEHP at the interface and the formation of the interfacial complex UO2A2
