PNRI 1998 Annual Report

The PNRI continued to extend specialized nuclear and allied services to clients from various sectors such as in industry, business, health, government and the academe. This year, we launched a new personnel monitoring service using the thermoluminescence dosimeter (TLD), thus making available to occupational radiation-exposed workers the inherent advantages of the technology. Our nuclear training courses benefited 112 private and government institutions. The PNRI- implemented foreign nuclear manpower development program resulted. in the participation in 126 manpower development opportunities. In pursuance of the PNRI's mandate to ensure the safe use of radioactive materials, the Institute enforced nuclear regulations through its licensing, inspection and safeguards activities. This year, the PNRI developed five regulations which are ready for inclusion in the Code of PNRI Regulations. The continuing development of regulations, standards, guides and bulletins accrues to improved understanding of the regulatory process and thus its effectiveness as instrument for nuclear safety. Fully aware of the finite resources available for the implementation of programs in nuclear energy and thus the critical role of cooperation in the national, regional and international levels, we have maintained and expanded our linkages. The PNRI National Rad waste Management Facility is the Demonstration Center for, Asia and the Pacific on Predisposal Radioactive Waste Management Methods and Procedures and hosted the first Demonstration this year. PNRI hosted seven other regional events. For the first time, the PNRI received a grant from the European Commission to undertake transformation studies on the Philippine fruit fly. Thus, all told toe have relentlessly worked for the safe utilization of nuclear energy in Philippine development, seizing the opportunities presented, and making do with the finite resources made available.
