Description
The possibility of unifying SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) in a larger group in N = 2 supersymmetric theory is discussed. If the latter remains unbroken down to low energy (proportionalTeV), the perturbation theory fails around 1010 GeV and the hope for unification is lost. This need not happen if quarks and leptons are composite with a compositeness scale less than 1010 GeV. Realistic preon models which may allow unification are very few. Among them are examples accommodating respectively one and three generations. (orig.)
