Behavior of nickel and cobalt in water as it evolves towards water-rock equilibrium (granitic zones)
Description
The study of processes governing the chemical composition of granitic areas waters is essential before the modification of such a site by radioactive waste storage. This work needs the sampling and the chemical determination of various advance degree to water rock equilibrium waters, from leaching waters to equilibrated ones. Nickel and cobalt are contained in this waste. As they are traces in natural environment, a little is known about their behaviour. A recent analytical method allows their measurements. One shows that their amounts are principally linked to their mineralogic origin and that the redox state of water together with the amounts of sulfur control their precipitation. In close to water-rock equilibrium waters, where the mineralization state can be characterized by chloride amounts, alkali elements solubility is constrained by the water charge before the alkali-earth ones. Before this, Ca and Mg amounts are regulated by an adsorption process. Fe and Mn amounts are regulated by a one proton exchange adsorption process, and the redox state of the solution is the determinant factor permitting their insoluble forms appearance. (author)
Abstract (French)
L'etude des processus regissant la composition chimique d'un systeme aqueux en terrain granitique est indispensable avant toute modification d'un tel site par stockage de dechets radioactifs. Elle necessite l'echantillonnage et le dosage d'eaux de differents degres d'evolution vers l'equilibre eau-roche, depuis des eaux de lessivage jusqu'a des eaux equilibrees. Le nickel et le cobalt font partie des elements contenus dans ces dechets. Elements traces en milieu naturel, peu de choses sont connues sur leur comportement. Une methode analytique recente a permis leur dosage. On montre que leur presence en solution est principalement liee a leur origine mineralogique et que le pouvoir redox de la solution ainsi que la presence de sulfure determinent leur possible precipitation. Dans les eaux proches de l'equilibre, ou la charge de la solution peut etre caracterisee par la teneur en chlorure, on observe que la solubilite des alcalins est contrainte par la charge de la solution avant celle des alcalino-terreux. Auparavant, les teneurs en calcium et en magnesium sont regulees par un processus d'adsorption. Les teneurs en fer et en manganese sont regulees par des processus d'adsorption avec echange d'un proton, mais aussi par la capacite redox de la solution permettant l'apparition de formes insolublesFiles
