New Sampling and Analysis Strategy for Determining Corrosion Risks to Hanford Site Double- Shell Tanks Containing Solids - 21169

Description
Legacy nuclear process waste stored in the underground double-shell tanks on the Hanford Site is maintained within strict chemical limits to minimize corrosion of the steel liners, and the solids content are increasing due to retrievals from single-shell tanks. We present a new syringe sampling method to provide sufficient material from the tank bottom for improved chemical and physical analysis of the interstitial liquid and solids and allowing multiple corrosion tests to better determine the corrosion risks to the tanks.
