Confirmatory measurement experiences at the Savannah River Site using a portable multi-channel analyzer

  • 1. Westinghouse Savannah River Co., Aiken, SC (United States)

Description

A continuing concern within the DOE complex is the control and accountability of special nuclear material. It is not enough to have a paper record of accountable material but it must be physically verified on a statistical sampling basis. The Material Control and Accountability section of the Westinghouse Savannah River Company has been developing a technique to confirm radioactive isotopes of interest in the field using a battery operated portable multi-channel analyzer and a sodium iodide gamma probe detector. A description of the instrument and examples of actual confirmatory measurements at a variety of locations and environments will be presented
