Quasi-fission reactions
Description
Recently a new, and quite distinct, mode of interactions between heavy ions has been identified. This quasi-fission mode is characterized by large amounts of mass transfer toward symmetry as well as total kinetic energies corresponding to the Coulomb repulsion between the fragments at the scission point. Several aspects of this reaction mechanism have been studied experimentally. These include the region of occurrence, reaction times, mass transfer rates and excitations of the tilting mode. These, and other aspects of the quasifission mechanism are discussed and compared with current theories
