Description

A paper is presented summarizing various reviews in the UK of the RBMK reactor (of which Chernobyl is the most famous example) against UK safety principles. After describing the UK safety principles, a detailed description is given of the RBMK reactor. Particular attention is given to channel tube failure, emergency cooling systems, containment, physics characteristics, reactor protection and operator action. Post Chernobyl changes to RBMK reactors are discussed but it is concluded that the current design does not meet UK safety principles or guidelines. (U.K.)
