Description
ORNL and IPP-Garching are collaborating on fundamental studies of breakdown properties of ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) antennas in fusion experiments. The ORNL RF Breakdown Tester consists of a resonant 3/4-wavelength section of vacuum transmission line of compound impedance with a removable end piece for varying the geometry. Tests have been conducted with various gases to determine the pressure at which the breakdown voltage is affected by the gas fill. Other end pieces with different shapes will be used to determine geometrical effects of the breakdown, and an ultraviolet light source will be used to determine the effect of low-energy photons on the breakdown. The effects of materials will be explored by plating the end piece with nickel and silver. Other gases will be tested to determine their deleterious effects. Initial results the breakdown tester on ASDEX Upgrade will be reported
