Description
The OPAL Engineering group completed a recent upgrade to the OPAL Control System, enabling continued improvements to its reliability, as well as ensuring ongoing supportability of the hardware and software for the computing systems as the software and hardware becomes unsupported by the equipment vendor. Trends in Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Operational Technology (OT) hardware and software have led to a significant reduction in the supported lifecycle of control systems, due to the increasing reliance on commercial IT equipment for some functions. This paper discusses the context surrounding this accelerated upgrade lifecycle and the case of the recent upgrade to the OPAL Reactor Control and Monitoring System (RCMS), and its successes and challenges.
