Works on a Moeller polarimeter for the extracted ELSA beam
Description
In future experiments with a polarized electron beam are planned at ELSA. The polarization degree of longitudinally polarized electrons can be measured by employing the spin dependence of the elastic electron-electron cross section (Moeller-scattering). Due to their lower energy the Moeller electrons can be separated from the primary beam by a dipol magnet which is part of the beam line. In a suitable apperatus the Moeller electrons can be detected. To enable a comparison between the measured and theoretical counting rate, it was necessary to measure the field of the dipol magnet. The field chart was used in a Monte-Carlo-simulation of the experiment. (orig.)

Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit haben gezeigt, dass der Aufbau der Moellerpolarimeters wesentlich verbessert werden muss. Dies betrifft insbesondere die Auslegung der Vakuumkammer und die der tatsaechlichen Optik angepassten Positionierung der Zaehler. Es muessen Untergrundstudien durchgefuehrt werden, um den Anteil der echten Koizidenzen aus Untergrundprozessen von der Moellerrate trennen zu koennen. Andererseits scheint es nicht gerechtfertigt, das Konzept des in der Strahlfuehrung integrierten Polarimeters zu verlassen, weil ein Polarimeter hinter dem Streutarget das Problem der Vielfachstreuung vergroessern und den Aufbau von anderen Nachweissystemen raeumlich einschraenken wuerde. Unabdingbar ist eine verbesserte Strahlqualitaet, so dass energieselektierende Zaehler (Schauerzaehler) und/oder ortsempfindliche Detektoren (Kammern) eingesetzt werden koennen. (orig.)
