Description
The new synthetic molecule radioiodine-labelled metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) is a structural analogue to catecholamines that is trapped by adrenergic storage vesicles. Because of its affinity for chromaffin tissues. MIBG is suitable for the scintigraphic detection and localization of pheochromocytomas. Radioiodine-labelled MIBG isotopic scan is especially useful, as compared to computed tomography, for the detection of extra-adrenal tumor sites, multiple tumors and metastases from malignant pheochromocytomas. MIBG also shows affinity for neuroblastomas and their metastases. I131-MIBG in therapeutic doses is a promising tool for the treatment of malignant pheochromocytomas and their metastases
