Description

Tb2(SO3)3 x 3H2O and Dy2(SO3)3 x 3H2O have been obtained by passing SO2 through water suspension of the corresponding oxides. According to the data of X-ray phase analysis, these compounds are isotypical. Infrared spectra of the compounds have been studied. Dy2(SO3)3 x32O and Tb2(SO3)3 x 3H2O are characterized by almost similar schemes of thermal decomposition in a nitrogen medium. Two-stage removal of water accompanied by endothermic effects at 140-145 deg C and 250-270 deg C is typical of the compounds. Further heating of non-aqueous sulphites gives rise to the formation of Tb2O2SO4, Dy2O2SO4, and then to Tb4O7 and Dy2O3
