Performance of BL-8 dispersive and BL-9 scanning EXAFS beamlines at Indus-2 synchrotron

Description

There are two EXAFS beamlines at 2.5 GeV Indus-2 synchrotron source at Raja Ramanna Center for Advanced Technology, Indore (India). One is BL-8 dispersive type beamline and another is BL-9 scanning type beamline. In order to evaluate the performance and usefulness of the two beamlines, studies of the XAFS spectra at Cu K-edge in copper metal and in a copper complex recorded at these beamlines have been presented. From this sample study and in general, it has been found that the range of the EXAFS data is more in BL-9 than BL-8. However, the bond lengths obtained from EXAFS data analysis are comparable for both the beamlines. Due to larger damping of EXAFS oscillations at higher energies in BL-8, higher disorder is obtained in BL-8. The resolution in the pre-edge and XANES region has been found to be more in BL-9. The advantage of BL-8 is that spectra can be recorded very quickly (∼300 ms) and hence beam time is easily available. Further, BL-8 is useful for performing in situ and time resolved studies. In BL-9, the time taken to record the spectrum is quite large (∼40 min) and hence it takes longer to get access to this beamline. (author)
