Joint project Partitioning II. Multifunctional complexing agents with N, O, S donor functions for d and f elements. Synthesis, complex formation, structure and transport behavior

Description

The main aim of the collaborative project was to investigate the interaction of newly synthesized supramolecular complexing agents with N, O, S donor functions towards d and f elements. The HZDR in subproject 1 focused on the complexation of N, O donor ligands, especially with the actinides U (VI) and Cm (III) and the lanthanides Eu (III), Ce (III) and Yb (III), in water and for the first time in organic solution as a function of the pH or redox voltage in the center. The corresponding complex stoichiometries and the spectroscopic properties of the complexes formed were determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy, various laser-induced methods, and IR spectroscopy. Using NMR and EXAFS spectroscopy, structural statements on the metal complexes in solution could be made. Using UV-Vis data, it was possible to determine reproducible complexation constants of actinide or lanthanide complexes with different β-diketones and Schiff bases in solution. Results of the HZDR work in subproject 2 showed that the interaction of water soluble calixarenes with radionuclide metal ions and the adsorption behavior of calixarenes on geomatrices under natural conditions (pH 4 - 9) are negligible. For the liquid-liquid extraction of divalent metal ions by means of radiotracer technology, water-insoluble calixarenes were detected, which can elementally separate the radionuclides 85Sr, 56Co, 64Cu and 65Zn from the aqueous phase. For strontium bis-salicylidene-diamino-calixaren is suitable, which can be back-extracted under mild conditions. Dicarboxy-calixaren extracts the d-elements quantitatively. This extraction is not completely reversible. Spectroscopic data were obtained for the formed calixarene complexes. The extraction methods were successfully used for four natural waters. Solid-phase-fixed calixarenes sorb radionuclides quantitatively, but complete desorption is not feasible.
