Swelling properties of the mudrocks at Harwell

Description

Swelling and swelling pressure have an impact in areas of repository engineering in the context of radioactive waste disposal in clay. This report presents and assesses the results of a preliminary study on the swelling of mudrock cores from Harwell boreholes HW3 and HW4. Apparatus has been developed for a one-dimensional pressure test. Supplementary tests included free-swell tests, and the determination of dry density, natural moisture content, linear shrinkage and Atterberg consistency limits. Minerological details of test materials are also given. (U.K.)
