The effects of a cold ion parallel beam on electromagnetic waves with frequency near an ion gyrofrequency during plasmaspheric refilling

  • 1. Newcastle Univ. (Australia). Dept. of Physics

Description

The influence of a cold ion parallel beam on electromagnetic waves, which have frequencies near an ion gyrofrequency, is investigated by solving the linear dispersion relation. This cold ion parallel beam may occur during the plasmaspheric refilling process in the magnetosphere. In the ion gyrofrequency range, the presence of a cold parallel ion beam leads to a new drift resonant mode, which may couple with the ion cyclotron mode and modify the topology of the wave dispersion relation.
