Description
An overview of all aspects of radioactive waste management in Czechoslovakia is presented. Legal acts and regulations underlying waste management are surveyed and institutions with legal authority are listed along with the fields of their responsibility. Sources of radioactive wastes are described; these include particularly uranium mines, nuclear power plants (at Jaslovske Bohunice, Dukovany and Mochovce), the Nuclear Research Institute in Rez, and the Institute for Research, Production and Application of Radioisotopes in Prague. Waste treatment methods applied in Czechoslovakia are outlined and principles of waste disposal site selection and management are given. Prospects of future development of the Czechoslovak waste management system are shown. (P.A.)
