Isotope and temperature depencence of the heat of transport of hydrogen isotopes in Ta

  • 1. Kyushu Univ., Fukuoka (Japan). Dept. of Nuclear Engineering

Description

The heat of transport Q* of H, D and T in the α-phase of the Ta-hydrogen system has been measured at average temperatures of 70, 150 and 2500C. An isotope dependence of Q* and a linear decrease of Q* with temperature have been ascertained. The characteristics of Q* for hydrogen isotopes which are common to group-V metals have been discussed on the basis of the present data for Ta and those for Va and Nb reported by Peterson and Smith and the present authors. It has been pointed out that there are definite trends such as Q*T > Q*D > Q*H and Q*(Ta) > Q*(Nb) > Q*(V), and that the ratios of Q*D/Q*H, Q*T/Q*H and Q*T/Q*D in Nb and Ta lie close to √2, √3 and √3/2, respectively. An atomic interpretation of Q* has been attempted on the basis of the biased diffusion model, and a common trend for group-V metals that the bias effect decreases with temperature has been pointed out. Abstract (German)
