Paediatric radiological practice: A case study involving radiographic imaging of the spinal cord

Description

A case study is presented to investigate the risk and benefits of common radiological techniques. The discrepancy between EC quality criteria for paediatric radiology and common practice is pointed out. The achievable dose reduction is to help develop a new working concept. The induced radiation hazard is calculated and compared to the expected benefits. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Als Fallstudie ueber Risiko/Nutzen einiger gelaeufigen Aufnahmen wird das Roentgen der Wirbelsaeule vorgestellt. Der bestehende Widerspruch zwischen den europaeischen Richtlinien ueber die anzuwendenden Qualitaetskriterien in der Kinderradiologie und dem tatsaechlichen Gebrauch der Roentgendiagnostik in diesem Bereich soll aufgezeigt werden. Die erzielte Dosisreduktion soll zu einem neuen Arbeitskonzept fuehren. Das induzierte Strahlenrisiko soll errechnet und in Zusammenhang mit dem zu erwartenden Nutzen gebracht werden. (orig.)
