Scattered component of a flux during irradiation of heterogeneous media by γ quanta

Description

Characteristics of scattered component of gamma radiation flux in composite materials, which is formed by inclusions, are investigated. The model of heterogeneous scatterer is used, in which the medium is presented in the form of spherical inclusions of certain size, chaotically located in vacuum, the substance of the inclusions has a small atomic number, the energy of incident quanta is not high, scattering being the main interaction process, relatively small part of the energy of a quantum is transmitted in the process of interaction. The calculations are made by the GETER program, taking into account coherent and oncoherent scattering on bound electrons as well as photoelectric absorption with subsequent possibility of fluorescence. Data characterizing the coefficients of total flux transmission and its direct component, buildup, and albedo factor for different sizes of inclusions, are presented. The conclusion is made that a heterogeneous layer is characterized by higher transmission coefficients and lower values of albedo and buildup factors as compared with a homogeneous layer
