Description

Cobalt-60 is used in irradiators in the health care industry to sterilize single use medical products. MDS Nordion designed irradiators are used by manufacturers to surgical kits, gloves, gowns, drapes and other medical products. In July 1999, MDS Nordion and Ontario Power Generation entered into an agreement to investigate cobalt-60 production at Pickering B. A Technical Feasibility Study (TFS) was conducted by a team consisting of MDS Nordion, OPGI and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. staff. In December 1999, the TFS team submitted their report with a preliminary cost estimate and schedule. This paper discusses the findings of the TFS and the technical effort involved in the conversion of Pickering B reactors to cobalt production
