Saskatchewan's NDP reverses uranium policy

At a recent (1992) convention, the ruling New Democratic Party in Saskatchewan voted against the standing policy which prescribed a moratorium and phaseout of uranium mining in the province. The decision means that exploration can proceed, as is needed because the currently producing mines will be depleted by 1997. The companies involved are Cameco, Uranerz, Amok, Cogema Canada, and others. Meanwhile, a proposed detailed exploration of the McArthur River deposit (54% owned by Cameco) was shortly to come under public review at the time of writing
