Description

New photocatalysts CaIn0.5M0.5O3 (M=Nb,Ta) with ABO3-type perovskite structure were synthesized and characterized by structural analysis, diffuse reflectance spectra and photocatalytic activity measurement under UV and visible light irradiation, respectively. From the photo-absorption behavior it is suggested that the conduction bands of the CaIn0.5Nb0.5O3 and CaIn0.5Ta0.5O3 photocatalysts are composed of In 5s-level and Nb 4d-level(or Ta 5d-level), and the valence bands are composed of O 2p level. For CaIn0.5Nb0.5O3 the band gap corresponding to O 2p → Nb 4d transition was determined as 4.2 eV, and for CaIn0.5Ta0.5O3 that corresponding to O 2p → Ta 5d transition was determined as 4.9 eV, respectively. Both compounds show an obvious photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). (orig.)
