Description

A thermal spike model is applied to the analysis of latent track formation by swift heavy ions in insulators. Expressions are derived for the prediction of the threshold electronic stopping power of track formation and the track sizes at different electronic stopping powers. Good agreement with experiments is found. Latent track data of LiNbO3 are analyzed and close similarity with those of yttrium iron garnet is observed including the velocity effect. (orig.)
