Nuclear physics and radiation protection for the nuclear environment

  • 1. CFA La Briquerie, La Malgrange, Thionville (France)

Description

This book proposes courses in nuclear physics (from matter constituents to radiation-matter interactions), in radiation protection (dosimetry, means of protection), on regulation regarding radiation protection, and so on. Each chapter is completed by corrected exercises. More precisely, the chapters address matter constituents, the history of radioactivity, energy within the matter core (units, origin of nuclear energy, energy assessment of a nuclear reaction), radioactivity (radioactive transitions, nucleus stability and instability), radioactive decay and nuclear counting, the radiation-matter interaction (generalities, interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter, interaction of particles with matter), external dosimetry (generalities, physical and dosimetric values, dose rate calculations, Kerma assessment for neutrons, protection values), detection (detector types, gamma spectrometry, detection thresholds), means of protection against external exposure and against internal exposure, biological effects of ionising radiations (molecular, cellular, deterministic and stochastic effects), regulation principles for radiation protection and in the specific case of transport, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion (principles), the operation of a nuclear plant and the management of nuclear wastes, predictive dosimetric assessments, various uses of ionising radiations and radionuclides (medical use, sterilisation, control devices, propulsion, fundamental sciences), natural and artificial radioactivity, and some accidents related to the use of nuclear energy (accident classification, accidents related to nuclear industry, accidents related to medical use)
