The radioactive waste repository in the Konrad shaft
Description
The most urgent problem to be solved by the nuclear industry is the LAW releasing very little decay heat, which contributes about 95 per cent of the total waste to be disposed in the FRG. This type of waste is planned to be buried in the abandoned iron ore shaft Konrad in the area of Salzgitter-Bleckenstedt, in the south-eastern part of Lower Saxony. The authors of the contributions in this book display their different approaches to and conclusions on the problem of the Konrad shaft being used as a waste repository, and the impacts and consequences resulting from this with respect to West Germany's energy policy and the population in this area. Another question discussed is whether there are legal or political ways and means to prevent the Salzgitter area from becoming the 'nuclear waste tip' of the FRG, or or even of Western Europe. Das draengendste Problem besteht fuer die Atomindustrie im Bereich der sogenannten 'nicht nennenswert waermeentwickelnden' radioaktiven Abfallstoffe, die etwa 95 Prozent der gesamten Volumenmenge der in der Bundesrepublik anfallenden radioaktiven Abfaelle ausmachen. Diese sollen ab 1983 in der ehemaligen Eisenerzgrube Schacht Konrad in Salzgitter-Bleckenstedt im suedoestlichen Niedersachsen eingelagert werden. Die Autoren der in diesem Band zusammengestellten Aufsaetze versuchen - aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln heraus - aufzuzeigen, welche Bedeutung die Realisierung eines Atommuellendlagers Schacht Konrad fuer die Zukunft der Energiepolitik der Bundesrepublik haette, aber auch, welche Gefaehrdungen fuer die Menschen in dieser Region von dieser Anlage ausgingen. Diskutiert wird in diesem Buch weiter die Frage, welche juristisch und politisch moeglichen Wege noch zur Verfuegung stehen, um zu verhindern, dass Salzgitter zum 'Atommuellklo der Republik' oder sogar Westeuropas wird.
