The uranium curse. Northern Niger, victim of its wealth - Information file
Description
The first document describes how the space used by nomadic populations in Niger has been progressively occupied for mining purposes, how nomadic and local communities are marginalised and threatened by the development of these activities. The case of Tuareg populations is highlighted (threat on its way of life, land dispossession). The over-exploitation of the Irhazer plain is outlined. The activity of Areva and the associated pollutions are described. The conflict situation in Northern Niger is finally addressed and also the way human rights are disregarded. Several appendices propose book extracts, press articles and other publications related to the political situation in Niger, to Areva's activities, to the pillage of resources, and to human rights issues
