Diffusional activated sintering: densification, microstructure and mechanical properties

Description

Theoretical and experimental concepts of diffusional activated sintering and densification during sintering are discussed, and enhanced diffusional sintering in tungsten based systems is considered. The rate of sintering is analyzed and the effects of activator type, amounts of activator, temperature, and time on the activated sintering of tungsten are demonstrated. It is observed that activated sintering occurs when the additive remains segregated as a grain boundary phase. An example of processing variables counteracting the benefits of enhanced sintering is given for rapid grain growth after densification. The proper selection of processing variables is stressed. 16 references
