Determination of the stoichiometry of uranium-dioxide by differential pulse polarography

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Analytical Chemistry Div.

Description

Uranium-dioxide is widely used as a fuel in nuclear reactor. It seldom approaches its theoretical ratio O/U of 2 in its stoichiometry. Differential pulse polarography (DPP) has been used to determine the excess oxygen in uranium-dioxide. A mixture of 2M H3 PO4+0.2M HClO4 serves to dissolve the UO2+x samples and also as supporting-electrolyte. The proposed method permits determination of U(VI) levels as low as 0.2 μg ml-1 with a relative standard deviation of about 2%. (author). 8 refs., 1 tab
